Dear Fresno:
Your weather is here, would you like it back? Just curious.
The personal blog of Paul Krohn, writing in San Francisco.
This afternoon I popped the top on a bottle of Brother David’s Double Abbey Style Ale. I picked it up from Healthy Spirits Belgian Beer, at the corner of 15th and Castro. I’m not as crazy-fond of it as Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale — perhaps because my Abbey ale habit is two brews old — but it is indeed a fine brew.
I’m amazed that a shop specializing in Belgian beer, or at least Belgian-style beer can make it. A shout-out to our friends at Unibroue, just east of Montreal, who are represented on the shelves of Healthy Spirits. Looking through the list I’m not exactly sure I remember which one it is, but this one looks like the best possibility.
Their display case is pretty impressive, next time I’m by I’ll ask them if it is OK for me to take a few pics.
It looks a little to me like the Muni wires are lifting up the fog as it burns off toward Twin Peaks in the afteroon. In the full-res image, you can make out Sutro Tower in the background (center).
As of about 6 p.m. today, we’re ratified! W00t! If you want to see more of the place, check out my Flickr photostream (look for a tag that is an address). You’ll need to be a Flickr friend/family to see them.
So the small hitch is that the buyers of the top floor unit (who beat us to the punch on that) have the exclusive right (from the seller) to build a roof deck. That possibility was a big attraction of the property, since a deck would have great views in all directions, and there is no other outside area of note … holding out the possibility this can be worked out.
We’ll we have an offer in on a place near Duboce Park, here in San Francisco. We’re extremely excited because the place is in a neighborhood we neve thought we’d be able to afford.
Wow now I’m o the phone with the agent … seems like there is the possibility of a deal … butterflies …
Or at least, a mild case of panic: here’s the tracking info for the computer I shipped myself.
I’ve just moved in to what is best described as a rooming house in the Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francsico. I’m in Room R, and in my assigned shelf the kitchen I found left behind:
Naturally I am temted to psychoanalyze these contents, but I will restrict myself to enjoying the irony of South Beach cookies (really a big WTF on their own), diet green tea (once again, WTF?), and the seven large chocolate bars,
The short version is, we have a deal. The house is sold. Not, of course, for what we wanted or were expecting, but it’s a deal we can live with.
We really could have lived without the shenanigans. Such as, telling our agent that their offer would be to close on August 1, after we protested over October 1. Then turn in an offer for October 1. I call shenanigans!
I shenanigans even more when they work, and against me. Anyway, it’s a deal and with any luck it won’t fall through. Fingers crossed!
Amongst the beers of Northern California, Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale stands as a fine addition to the class. Finely carbonated and with a rich finish, and just a hint of the intense bitterness sometimes associated with abbey ales, it has a mild yeasty aroma. If you’re curious about abbey ales and want to give them a try, this is an excellent place to start. But watch how much you drink: it packs a punch at 9.4% alcohol.
Oh and yes, they do have something to do with Thelonious Monk: they make donations to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz for every case purchased.
